The Westlake Christian School Media Center is a wonderful place to “guide and inspire students to develop their God given potential, while fostering a lifelong love of learning, in a nurturing Christ-centered environment.” The weekly Media Center classes expose students to high quality literature, leading to a lifelong love of reading. In addition, students learn skills which become the foundation for research projects in all subject areas.
In keeping with our school's mission statement, we guide students to respond to library materials from a Christian perspective, teaching them the importance of discernment in choosing materials and evaluating information.
Our curriculum follows standards of the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards for Library Media.
IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT OUR ACCELERATED READER PROGRAM
This year your child will be participating in the Accelerated Reader (AR) Program.
AR is a computer program that helps teachers manage and monitor children’s independent reading practice. Your child chooses a book at his own level and reads it at his own pace. When finished, your child takes a short quiz on the computer. (Passing the quiz is an indication that your child understood what was read.) AR gives both children and teachers feedback based on the quiz results, which the teacher then uses to help your child set goals and direct ongoing reading practice.
Children using AR choose their own books to read, rather than having one assigned to them. This makes reading a much more enjoyable experience as they can choose books that are interesting to them.
Renaissance Home Connect is available to provide parents with updates about their child’s AR progress. You can view Renaissance Home Connect from any computer with an Internet connection using these browsers:
• Internet Explorer 6.02 or later
• Firefox 1.5 or later
• Safari 2.1.3 or later
Your child’s teacher will provide your child’s username and password.
Then to log in to Renaissance Home Connect, click here.

If you have questions about the program or problems logging in to Home Connect, please see your child’s teacher.
We look forward to great year of reading here at Westlake!
